The Maritimes - Canadian Coins

The years prior to Confederation saw the Maritime Provinces minted their own coinage. As the Provinces were incorporated in Canada, these issues stopped and eventually declined out of circulation. The last Province to join, amid great controversy, was Newfoundland. Newfoundland became a province of Canada in 1949. The last coinage of Newfoundland as an independent colony was dated 1947.
